Nintendo Is Considering Launching a Smaller, More Portable Game-Focused Switch, According to Nikkei

Just because there’s a Switch review wouldn’t get us new ones. In fact, it’s not the first time we’ve talked about it at VidaExtra. However, with over 33 million units sold and the slow – but inevitable – decline of 3DS, it is logical that Nintendo will be looking for a successor to the throne of handheld gaming. One that Switch itself could claim.

According to Nikkei, Nintendo is currently evaluating the launch of a new, more affordable model of Nintendo Switch, which is smaller in size and lacks some of the features of the current version. In fact, this revision would be focused on handheld gaming.

A decision that would also have a strategic element: the Japanese media would consider the forecast of a 20% drop in sales in the latest report (from 17 million units to 15 million) as another incentive to launch this new Switch.

The Nikkei itself estimates that this model focused on portable gaming and at a reduced price would be launched throughout the next fiscal year (between April 2019 and March 31, 2020). This makes sense given the arrival of the long-promised Pokémon RPG this year.

However, despite this information coinciding with what we saw from the WSJ last year, Nintendo itself has not claimed, denied or confirmed anything, although a new, more economical model of Switch could be particularly interesting in opening the door to new people interested in taking over current and future Nintendo hits.
